Museum Shop View of Museum Shop

The Museum Shop is widely regarded as the best place in Port Vila to purchase Ni-Vanuatu items. Work of local artisans and artists from many parts of Vanuatu are on sale at very reasonable prices and a very fair price is paid to the local producers. The development of local co-operatives for the production of items is encouraged.

The Museum Shop is widely regarded as the best place in Port Vila to purchase Ni-Vanuatu items.

Every item is carefully selected for its traditional authenticity and high quality of craftsmanship. Baskets, mats, shell-hangings, pendants and carvings are very popular with visitors, as are musical instruments, especially engraved bamboo flutes.

Dramatic masks and headdresses can be purchased. Books and videos relating to past and present-day life in Vanuatu are also on sale, as are postcards produced by the Cultural Centre from historical photographs in its collections. CDs and audiotapes produced by the Cultural Centre’s National Film and Sound Unit are displayed and sold, and Vanuatu Cultural Centre T-shirts and polo shirts are available in a variety of colours and sizes.

The shop is committed to the encouragement and development of local co-operatives and fair trade. The Shop is run by Thomas Freddy, who also works as a Museum tour-guide and commentator. Profits from the Shop make a very significant contribution to the Museum budget.
