From the 7th to the 11th of May 2007, Sero Kuautonga staged a solo exhibition of 13 of his most recent paintings, done after his return from his artist-in-residency at the Centre Culturel Tjibaou in Noumea in February and March 2007, at l’Espace Culturel de l’Ambassade de France on the main street of Port Vila.
Sero is the President of the Nawita Association of contemporary artists, Vanuatu’s oldest visual artists’ collective.

Biography
Sero wan one of the first ni-Vanuatu to become involved in creating contemporary art. Born in 1961 in Ipau village on the island of Futuna in Tafea Province, Sero’s artistic talents were recognized and encouraged by his teachers while he was at the regional district school on the island of Tanna, and this interest continued after he went on to the main French high school in Port Vila.
While in high school, Sero assisted his art teacher in teaching pottery as part of the school art course. In recognition of his artistic talents, the Lands Survey Department of the pre-Independence Government of National Unity requested Sero to begin working for them in 1978 in preparation for Independence in 1980. He worked there for over ten years, during which time he was trained in cartography. From 1995 to 2000, Sero held the position of Curator of the National Museum of Vanuatu in the Vanuatu Cultural Centre.
Sero’s first exhibition was held at the Vanuatu Cultural Center in Port Vila in 1983 and since then he has exhibited a number of times in Port Vila and abroad in the following countries: New Caledonia, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, Austria, France, England, Tonga and the Solomon Islands. As President of Nawita Association, he created relationships between the Association and the Hieghene Cultural Centre and the Tjibaou Cultural Center in New Caledonia. Sero took part in the 12th Koi Neva exhibition at the Tjibaou Cultural Center in 1990.
Regarded as one of Vanuatu’s most innovative artists, Sero has worked in a wide variety of mediums and styles, and is currently particularly interested in abstract painting using experimental media.
Sero is married with four children. Like most other indigenous artists, his art is inspired by the ritual life and environments of Vanuatu.
Biographie
Séro Kuautonga était l’un des premiers ni-Vanuatu à rentrer dans la création de l’art contemporain. Née en 1961, il est originaire d’Ipau sur l’île de Futuna dans la Province de Tafea. Son talent d’artiste a été découvert par ses professeurs à l’école primaire d’Isangel à Tanna. Cela lui a été toujours intéressé qu’il continua après qu’il ait passé au Lycée de Port-Vila. Au Lycée, il aida son professeur d’art à donner des cours de poterie et même décorer l’extérieur du réfectoire. En reconnaissance de son talent, Séro a été recruté par le Gouvernement de l’Unité Nationale à travailler au Service Topographique comme dessinateur en préparation de l’Indépendance de 1980. Il y a travaillé pendant plus de 10 ans d’où il a été formé comme Dessinateur Cartographe. En 1995, Séro occupait le poste de Conservateur au Musée National du Vanuatu dans le Centre Culturel.
Considéré comme l’un des artistes le plus connu du Vanuatu, Séro a travaillé sur plusieurs sorte de mediums différent styles mais il préfère l’art abstrait. Sa première exposition a été tenu au Centre Culturel du Vanuatu en 1983 et depuis il expose sur d’autres endroits à Port-Vila. Avec les membres de l’Association Nawita, il a exposé plusieurs fois à l’étranger à compter la Nouvelle-Calédonie, la Nouvelle-Zélande, l’Australie, la Suisse, l’Autriche, la France et l’Angleterre. Elu président de l’Association Nawita, il a celé les liens avec le Centre Culturel de Hyenghene et le Centre Culturel Tjibaou en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Séro a été selectionné à participer pour la première fois à l’exposition « Ko Neva » qui s’est déroulé en 1990 à Nouméa en Nouvelle-Calédonie. En 1997, il a participé à la première rencontre des artistes indigènes à Rotorua en Nouvelle-Zélance. Il a bénéficié d’une résidence suite à un échange culturel entre le Musée de Bâle et Port Vila.

Séro était l’un des 3 artistes selectionnés à la Biennale 2000 pour le Festival du Pacifique Sud.
En 2007, il a été invité d’un mois de résidence d’art au Centre Culturel Tjibaou, d’où par la suite, toute sa sélection est retenue pour y être exposée l’année prochaine en 2008. Il également participé à l’expositon « Ko Neva » qui a pour thème ‘Origine’.
Séro s’inspire beaucoup de son environnement et de la culture du Vanuatu mais l’exprime toujours contemporainement.
