Vanuatu Cultural Centre

To celebrate the 30^th anniversary of the declaration of independence in Vanuatu, the National Museum is pleased to present a commemorative exhibition that charts the development of the nation over the past three decades.

Histori blong yumi 1980 - 2010 features an array of never before seen images from the National Photographic Archive that highlight the advancements of the archipelago.  From initial independence celebrations held in 1980 through to the expansion of public and private sectors, the photographs present an intriguing insight into changes that have occurred in both urban and rural areas.  Thematically the exhibition chronicles issues such as climate change, the position of women and youth, the expansion of educational services, custom and culture, infrastructural development, and the evolving nature of Vanuatu’s relationship with foreign nations.  In addition, portraits of each President and Prime Minister to have held office are displayed to recognise and honour the significant contribution these leaders have made to the progress of the country.

To complement the display of photographs, a selection of artefacts from the collection of the National Museum of Vanuatu is also presented.  The objects embody a sense of history and transport visitors to celebrations held in 1980 – a tam tam presented to the peoples of the nation, a knife incised with a namele leaf and pig tusk, an umbrella presented to dignitaries, and a headdress used in Nahosoa Nalawan rituals.  Together these objects showcase the diverse cultural materiality of independence celebrations.

To commemorate this historic independence anniversary, the International Airport, Reserve Bank and Bred Bank have joined with the National Museum – each displaying a selection of photographs from the exhibition.  Likewise, to showcase the opening of the Tanna Cultural Centre, a variety of images will bring the festivities to the peoples of the island.

 The exhibition is open to the public from Tuesday 13 July until Saturday 31 July, and is proudly supported by the Government of the Republic of Vanuatu through funds provided by the 30^th Anniversary of Independence Task Force Committee.
