Port Vila Public Library accepts mats as payment for membership

As part of the celebration of 2007 as the Year of the Traditional (Custom) Economy, the Port Vila Public Library is offering ‘Mat Membership’ to those children and adults who wish to become Library members.

This means that, in exchange for one mat, any child or student will receive one year’s membership of the Public Library and will be able to borrow books for one year, without any other payment. Adults will exchange two mats for membership for 2007.

On Friday the 9th of February 2007, Ms Isabelle Petri and a group of Vila East school students were the first people to take advantage of this ‘kastom’ method of paying their annual library subscription. Jean-Pascal Wahé, library trainee, was at hand in traditional dress to receive their mats.
