National Lands Summit sets new direction for land policy in Vanuatu

In the week of the 25th to the 29th of September 2006, the National Lands Summit was held at the Chief's Nakamal in Port Vila. The staging of this Lands Summit was one of the recommendations that came out of the National Summit on Self Reliance and Sustainability, organised by the Malvatumauri (National Council of Chiefs), the Vanuatu Cultural Centre and the Vanuatu Credit Union League - as part of the Traditional Money Banks Project - in July 2005.

The Malvatumauri - in conjunction with the Cultural Centre, the Credit Union League and a number of NGOs collectively grouped under the name "Advocacy Coalition on Economics" (ACE) - submitted a list of 40 recommendations to the Lands Summit.

See the Land Summit program.

The first outcome of the Lands Summit was an "Interim transitional strategy" to assist in implementing the resolutions of the Summit. The first part of this strategy lists the 20 resolutions that were the outcome of the Summit.

See this Interim Transitional Strategy.

This interim strategy was then approved by the Council of Ministers on the 16th of November 2006, with a few amendments.
