Traditional Resource Management

Strengthening indigenous knowledge and traditional resource management through schools
This is a joint project between the Vanuatu Cultural Centre, the Ministry of Education, the Environment Unit and UNESCO/LINKS entitled "Strengthening indigenous knowledge and traditional resource management through schools: A pilot partnership involving local communities, teachers, resource managers and culture specialists". It is a project-awaiting-funding which aims to implement the incorporation of traditional resource management knowledge into the formal school curriculum
 
The Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and Traditional Resource Management (TRM) Database Project
The Cultural Centre has entered into a sub-contract with the Vanuatu Environment Unit's "Landholders’ Conservation Initiatives" project to establish a database to improve access to information relating to traditional biodiversity knowledge and management practices. This database will be an important mechanism in making appropriate knowledge accessible for policy, planning, educational and community needs
 
The Vanuatu Indigenous Peoples' Forum 2007
The Vanuatu Indigenous Peoples’ Forum was hosted in Lavatmagemu village in north-east Pentecost island from the 20th to the 26th of April 2007 by the Melanesian Institute of Philosophy, Science and Technology. The Forum brought together 500 participants from all over Vanuatu. The resolutions of the Vanuatu Indigenous Peoples’ Forum were finalised as the Lavatmagemu Dekleresen 2007, parts of which were then presented (in the month of May) to the 6th session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York

Year of Traditional Economy awareness in SHEFA Province
The official awareness team for the Year of Traditional Economy recently completed a month-long tour of SHEFA Province in the month of April. This is the second provincial tour out of a year's worth of tours of all Provinces of Vanuatu raising awareness about the objectives of the Year of the Traditional Economy and how members of each community can play their part
 
2007: « L’Année de l’Economie Traditionnelle »
Le Gouvernement a officiellement déclaré l’année 2007, année de «l’Economie Traditionnelle» («Yia Blong Kastom Ekonomi» en bislama). Chaque année, Le Gouvernement choisit un thème différent pour focaliser l’attention nationale, par exemple, l’an dernier était l’Année du Tourisme
 
2007 declared "Year of the traditional economy"
The Government has declared 2007 to be the "Year of the traditional economy" ("Yia blong kastom ekonomi" in Bislama). Each year a different theme is chosen by the Government as a focus for national attention: last year, for example, was the Year of Tourism. A national steering committee has been appointed by the Prime Minister and has approved a set of objectives and activities to be undertaken as part of this year.

Port Vila Public Library accepts mats as payment for membership
As part of the celebration of 2007 as the Year of the Traditional (Custom) Economy, the Port Vila Public Library is offering ‘Mat Membership’ to those children and adults who wish to become Library members
 
National Lands Summit sets new direction for land policy in Vanuatu
In the week of the 25th to the 29th of September 2006, the National Lands Summit was held at the Chief's Nakamal in Port Vila. The staging of this Lands Summit was one of the recommendations that came out of the National Summit on Self Reliance and Sustainability, organised by the Malvatumauri (National Council of Chiefs), the Vanuatu Cultural Centre and the Vanuatu Credit Union League - as part of the Traditional Money Banks Project - in July 2005.
The Malvatumauri in conjunction with the Cultural Centre and other organisations submitted a list of 40 recommendations to the Lands Summit, a number of which were carried as the final resolutions of the Summit.
